Car Insurance SR22 Mississippi

Reader’s Question:

I got convicted of DUI in Jackson, Mississippi and was required to carry an SR22. How long do I have to carry this SR22?

Michelle

Jackson, MS

In Mississippi a DUI conviction can result in fines, mandatory participation in alcohol education programs, jail time, and much more in a court case. In addition to that the MS Department of Motor Vehicles can suspend the driver’s license for a period of time.

The Department of Public Safety requires proof of financial responsibility in the form of a SR-22 car insurance policy, once an individual is convicted of driving under the influence in Mississippi. The SR-22 must be maintained for a period of three years in MS.

After the three year, typically, the DUI conviction is removed from the driver’s record for insurance purposes. The DUI however, will stay on the person’s driving history for five years for court and punishment purposes.
